The Mobile Cellular Subscriptions Dashboard from InetSoft is an excellent example of an effective dashboard layout. It demonstrates cellphone usage saturation globally over a period of 68 years. A number of graphical effects are used to display the data set, using a range of chart types.
The most prominent chart is of course the map situated in the top left hand corner. This chart uses a ‘temperature’ gradient effect, with different shades of color demonstrating different levels of usage. The colour scheme ranges from dark to very light brown, and a small key next to the chart gives an indication of scale. The remaining upper half of the dashboard is occupied by a pie chart, which is initially set up to display cellphone usage by continent. This allows for direct comparison of cellphone usage by region.
The lower left hand corner of the dashboard is occupied by a bar chart, which shows the total sum of cellphone subscriptions by year, while opposite it is the selection container. The selection options allow users to adjust the period of time over which the data set is being examined. Any year or group of years between January 1960 and January 2008 may be selected. This allows users to filter their selections effectively. A further selection option is the choice of country. A single country may be selected, and its rate of cellphone usage can be examined over any period of time. If two or more countries are selected, the pie chart adjusts to give a direct comparison of cellphone usage between these countries.
